Weight Loss Management Program Q & A

What is considered overweight and obese?

Body mass index (BMI) is a simple way to evaluate your status as overweight or obese. Although this measure may miscategorize especially muscular people, it’s a good general measure for the majority of the population.

The body mass index is a calculation derived from your height and weight. People who have a BMI greater than 25 are considered overweight, and those with a BMI greater than or equal to 30 are considered obese.

At Priority Health Group, the staff monitors BMI and lab values to help inform their diagnosis and treatment recommendations for weight loss. They also use an Inbody brand biometric impedance scale to measure body composition — or your levels of fat versus lean tissue.

Why is it important to achieve a healthier weight?

Carrying excess weight, especially when it puts you in the category of “obese,” puts you at a greater risk of certain health problems. These include:

  • High blood cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease and stroke
  • Some Cancers

Osteoarthritis, mood disorders and depression, and sleep apnea occur far more often in people who are obese or overweight, too. People who are obese are at a significant risk of early death. Losing weight can not only decrease your risk of developing diseases, but it can also help improve your quality of life.

What does a supervised weight loss program entail?

At Priority Health Group, the staff incorporates nutrition and diet counseling provided by a certified nutritionist. Our providers may prescribe medications, including phentermine, to help with appetite control when necessary. Targeted exercise recommendations are also made along with regular monitoring of your weight, body composition, and lab values.

What is phentermine?

Phentermine suppresses your appetite by targeting your central nervous system. It’s not prescribed to all people who need to lose weight, but typically to those who have dire health complications — such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes — due to their size.

Take phentermine only as prescribed by your doctor. It can lead to some side effects, including restlessness, headache, dizziness, and upset stomach. If you find these side effects intolerable, contact the office immediately.
